First there is the camera. Behind it there is the eye and then, most importantly of all, there is the heart. After completing a degree in zoology and botany, photographer Caroline Gibello embarked on a journey to explore the world.

With money saved from her first job as a shepherdess on a Scottish Border sheep farm, she bought her first SLR camera, and with the instruction manual in her backpack set off for Asia, where she spent time exploring the Himalayas and the jungles and coastlines of the South East. Consumed by the beauty of the people and environment that surrounded her, a passion for photography was born.

On returning to Cape Town she studied fine art photography at the University of Cape Town and since then, in between wild and exotic wanderings around the world, has pursued a career as a commercial and fine art photographer.

Inspired by the adventure of life, Caroline's work conveys a strong sense of beauty and reverence for freedom and spirit. The essence of her irrepressible and infectious joy and love of life is transmitted through the multitude of images she has captured throughout her life. Her yearning to explore and experience the diversity of life in its myriad forms is a passion that has cultivated a delicate and sensitive eye for texture, light, colour and, most noticeably, context. Whether it is in the sky, high up on a mountaintop or driving through the expanse of a vast African desert in her Land Rover, Caroline brings a unique and singular vision to her work, seeing beyond the obvious.

The ethereal beauty of flamingos taking flight, the vivid colours and abstract textures of Madagascan doors, the meditative stance of a Tuareg nomad in the Sahara or the naive delight of children playing in a South African township – these are just some of the images Caroline has captured throughout the years and that all evoke the strong sense of mystery that defines her work.

Caroline has a particular affinity with the continent of her birth, Africa, and her current series of work, entitled ‘Heaven and Earth’ is an ongoing African Portfolio which she exhibits from her gallery in Cape Town, Galleria Gibello. From India to China to the deepest reaches of the Amazon Jungle, exotic destinations and cultures are the backdrop to the many adventures that inspire Caroline’s work.

Her work is exhibited internationally and has found homes in all corners of the globe.
